Musings for a Beautiful Day

Block Island, Connecticut
When my son, a friend and I were on Block Island. I wasn’t planning on us going swimming. I thought we would just walk along the shore and get our feet wet. Well, we had walked for a while when we decided to sit. Reed started walking out into the ocean. At first he would just walk out a little ways, so that he wouldn’t get his clothes wet. Then while he was playing fetch with this black lab, a big wave came and got the bottom of his pants wet. He was still trying to just get the bottom wet. But pretty soon he thought well the bottoms wet, how about going out a little further. So then the waves are hitting him all the way to the bottom of his shirt. Then he takes a look back at me to see if I’m watching and then he runs all the way in getting his entire body wet in the water; enjoying the joy of body surfing the waves. It was a beautiful day and he could not help himself. He wanted to be there in the water and waves, enjoying the sun and would worry about what Mom had to say later. Right now, in the moment, it was right.

When we started out that morning, I wasn’t sure if it was going to be a beautiful day. Reed had a frown on his face when I woke him. By the time we got to the boat, I wondered if the frown would ever go away. All he wanted on the boat was quarters to play Ms. Pac Man. I felt like I was in the commercial with the voice of the mother who is sounding like a wildlife guide in search of some rare mysterious creature. She is sneaking up on her pray and captures that rare thing, a smile from a frowning daughter. So there he is experience joy, smiling and laughing. There is no way I’m going to ruin the moment.

Sometimes it is hard to find the beauty and joy because the stuff of life that isn’t easy and breaks in on us (becoming a teenager, changing jobs, moving, getting sick, losing someone…) Yet, we can’t avoid the stuff of life. So where do we turn. What will help us to enjoy the beautiful day?

The psalms provide a wonderful example of how to live life in the midst of pain, attacks, fear, enemies and illness. Even in the darkest psalm, a song, prayer where the writer is surrounded by enemies, there is hope. A hope founded on the belief that God is merciful and abounding in steadfast love. God is there to help and save us. There is a never a dark so dark that God cannot shine through. The psalms show how to live life. It isn’t always going to be a beautiful day. But when we stop to step out, to dip our toes in the water, pretty soon we remember that God will help us through and we can’t help but body surf the waves. We are to enjoy the beautiful day, as the Contemporary Psalmist U2 sing:

The heart is a bloom
Shoots up through the stony ground
There's no room
No space to rent in this town

You're out of luck
And the reason that you had to care
The traffic is stuck
And you're not moving anywhere

You thought you'd found a friend
To take you out of this place
Someone you could lend a hand
In return for grace
It's a beautiful day
Sky falls, you feel like
It's a beautiful day
Don't let it get away

May you find a beautiful day
