The Call to Discipleship in the Gospel of Mark, Day 33
Leonski Oh Leonski Jesus crown of Thorns West Pier Brighton
When they got out of the boat, people at once recognized him, and rushed about that whole region and began to bring the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was. And wherever he went, into villages or cities or farms, they laid the sick in the market-places, and begged him that they might touch even the fringe of his cloak; and all who touched it were healed. Mark 6:53-56With the hardened hearts of the disciples from Mark 6:43-52, Mark wants us to know that there are people who do receive Jesus and his ministry, who hear the word and spread it. This summary paragraph of ministry is to let us not loose heart, the word will spread and the kingdom will continue to dawn. The first summary reminds us of the story in Mark 2:1-11 of the friends who bring the paralytic on a pallet to Jesus to be healed. The community is there to bring us to God when are not able to bring ourselves. Jesus tells this man his sins are forgiven and invited him to stand and walk. Jesus is the one who comes to forgive sins and heal the broken parts of us.
Then we are reminded of Mark 5:24-34, where a woman has so much faith that she believes she will be healed if she just touched his cloak. So more people are coming and believe that just to touch him, will make them well. As with this women we are reminded that the last will be first in the new family of God. The faith is spreading even here in the Gentile territories, God kingdom has come to the outsiders who are not part of God's dawning kingdom. God's word of forgiveness and healing will not be stopped by ethnic boundaries.
I invite you to pray with the scripture and ask God where you should go - a coffee shop, a park, a train station - any place where people will be sitting and talking. Sit quietly and listen to the people around you and pray for them. Pray for them as the Spirit moves you. Amen.
