God has place this wonderful creation in our hands. As U2 sings, "It's a beautiful day, don't let it slip away." We have this one life to live on this beautiful planet so enjoy these reflections on God, faith, life, and music. "After the flood all of the colors came out. It's a beautiful day."

A Family History of Grace

An account of the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
Abraham was the father of Isaac, and Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers, 3and Judah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Aram, 4and Aram the father of Aminadab, and Aminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon, 5and Salmon the father of Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse, 6and Jesse the father of King David.
And David was the father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah, 7and Solomon the father of Rehoboam, and Rehoboam the father of Abijah, and Abijah the father of Asaph, 8and Asaph the father of Jehoshaphat, and Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, and Joram the father of Uzziah, 9and Uzziah the father of Jotham, and Jotham the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz the father of Hezekiah, 10and Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, and Manasseh the father of Amos, and Amos the father of Josiah, 11and Josiah the father of Jechoniah and his brothers, at the time of the deportation to Babylon.
And after the deportation to Babylon: Jechoniah was the father of Salathiel, and Salathiel the father of Zerubbabel, 13and Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, and Abiud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the father of Azor, 14and Azor the father of Zadok, and Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud, 15and Eliud the father of Eleazar, and Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob, 16and Jacob the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called the Messiah.
So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David to the deportation to Babylon, fourteen generations; and from the deportation to Babylon to the Messiah, fourteen generations. Matthew 1:1-17

A Genealogy of Grace

do you know your family history?
are there stories you laugh?
ancestors that make you proud
ancestors that make you sad
ancestors that you question the truth of

these stories define our families
they tell about who we are
who we as a people hope to be

my father's mother's family
tells the story of coming to America
they gather every year to celebrate 3 brothers
who marry 3 sisters
these Robinson daughter's
grandchildren of John Robinson
the Pilgrim pastor who sent the Pilgrims to America
Roger Williams statue by Franklin Simmons
we sing his words every summer
words that speak of light and truth always breaking anew
words that invite us to be better than we are
we celebrate a history of faith
we celebrate a history of religious freedom
we share the story of being persecuted
twe trace a history of religious liberty here in America
moving from Massachusetts to Connecticut, Rhode Island
some of these ancestors are famous and some are normal
all were interested in religious freedom, in practicing the faith on their terms
as a family we valued religious liberty

James A. Garfield
my mother's family
shares hushed stories
a the wrong side of the sheets
a president who created a family never claimed

Jesus' genealogy, his family tree
a family full of skeletons in the closet
a family that has heroes and villains
a family of grace
Abraham
a man who let the Egyptian play with his wife
who almost killed his son
who abandoned his son from a slave
Tamar, a black widow
she tricked her father-in-law into fathering a child
Rahab
a prostitute, a savior
Ruth, the grandmother of a king
a foreigner, an enemy, unlucky
she too tricks a man in to sleeping with her
she does so to save her mother-in-law
David, a king
a murderer, an adulterer, a sinner
a bad parent

Jesus' ancestors whow us that God's history
God's story, is full of grace, forgiveness
God's story calls the unlikely, the unlikable
God can work through us, despite us
God's grace transforms those awful memories, the painful moments
God moves through our family history, our present history
God redeems and loves the good and the bad, the messy and well behaved
God's love weaves us together in grace
