Wrestling with Daniel's God
In the third year of the reign of King Jehoiakim of Judah, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it. The Lord let King Jehoiakim of Judah fall into his power, as well as some of the vessels of the house of God. These he brought to the land of Shinar, and placed the vessels in the treasury of his gods. Daniel 1:1-2
My son and I walk into our apartment after vacation
I unlocked the door like normal
and then I notice the tv is gone
my computer is gone
the drawers and closets are open
someone has been here
someone has stolen my stuff
I don't feel safe
I don't feel safe for a long time
I am constantly double and triple checking the locks
I can't move for 12 months
I have no money to replace the items lost
It takes a long time to feel safe and a move halfway across the country
My thief was a kid, a young adult
His father lived upstairs
he broke in and took everything of value
the wedding ring I no longer wear is gone forever to someone else's life
It was just a kid
in the third year on your Jehoiskim reign
a Babylonian king comes to Jerusalem and takes, steals, robs, the temple
he took what was a value in the house of God
he had it thrown in the treasury to his gods
the people, God's people
never felt safe again
in the place where they were supposed to be the safest
the place where they come for comfort, for hope, for peace
it is no longer safe, protected
the house of prayer
has become a broken home
the scripture says, God allowed this
why,
why would God allow the people to fall, the church to be robbed
why would the writers believe that God played a role in this
why would God take sides in the war and let those loved lose
why
the scripture believe that God gets angry or disappointed
in God's anger, there is punishment, there is captivity, there is loss
God punishes our lack of faith, our forgetfulness, our neglect to love other's
this God who allows this, causes this
scares me
this doesn't feel like the God I believe in, the one I follow
why would God cause that kid to steal my stuff
why would God choose a side in a war where it is always the ordinary, poor who get hurt
I wrestle with this God pictured in Daniel
I wrestle with a God that punishes us, that causes bad to happen to
I wrestle with this God
